Πέραν των βιογραφικών στοιχείων, που μας δίδουν οι ανθολόγοι της Φιλοκαλίας, περί των μακαρίων Ξανθοπούλων, που ήσαν τόσο αγαπημένοι σαν μια ψυχή “εν δυσί σώμασι”- τους οποίους ο άγιος Συμεών Θεσσαλονίκης ονομάζει “θεηγόρους, θεοφόρους, χριστοφόρους και ενθέους” -, δεν γνωρίζουμε αρκετά από τον υπερφυσικό βίο τους. Αλλά το ύψος της αγιότητός των γίνεται αισθητό μέσα από τα θεία λόγια τους, φορτισμένα ερωτικώς από τις ενέργειες του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ακριβώς γι’ αυτό δεν γνωρίζουμε ποιός υπερείχε του άλλου, αφού τα εκατό Κεφάλαια παραδίδονται ως κοινοί καρποί, όπου γίνεται πνευματικώς αισθητό το “αλλόμενον ύδωρ” στις αγιασμένες καρδιές τους.

Ο όσιος Θεόδωρος, ο και Σαββαΐτης αποκαλούμενος, γιατί ασκήθηκε στη μονή του αγίου Σάββα στα Ιεροσόλυμα, αλλά και Εδέσσης λεγόμενος, γιατί εξελέγη επίσκοπος στη Μητρόπολη της πόλεως Έδεσσα της Συρίας, έζησε κατά τον έβδομον αιώνα και ήταν γνωστός ως “μεγάλος ασκητής”. Υπήρξε πνευματικότατος και θεωρητικότατος, όπως καταφαίνεται τόσο από τα “Εκατό Κεφάλαια”, όσο και από το “Θεωρητικό”, που απ’ όλα τα έργα του ενσωμάτωσαν μόνον αυτά οι συντάκτες της Φιλοκαλίας.
Στα “Εκατό Κεφάλαια” απαντούμε συχνά: “όπως είπε ένας από τους αρχαίους”, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι εκμεταλλεύεται την πείρα των προγενεστέρων ασκητικών Πατέρων και την αναχωνεύει στην προσωπική του πείρα, ως σύμφωνη, αλλά και για περισσότερη κατοχύρωση της διδασκαλίας του. Υπάρχουν ολόκληρα κεφάλαια ελαφρώς τροποποιημένα που αποτελούν μεταγραφές από τον Ευάγριο και τον άγιο Μάξιμο, τα οποία όμως αποβαίνουν το θεμέλιο άλλων δικών του κεφαλαίων.

Children learn about the birth of Christ through the world of Byzantine art. An art that is close to children’s souls, for it does not use shadow, peerspective, divisions or time. Dionysiou Monastery kindly gave permission for these wonderful frescoes to be reproduced in the present edition. It is their hope that these icons will speak to the souls of our children.

Who where the parents of Mother of God? How many steps did she take when she first walked? What did Christ do when she spokw to Him at the wedding at Cana? How is her soul depicted in icons? Children learn about Mary’s life through looking ath the beautiful wall-paintings by Tzortzis from the main church of Dionysiou Monastery on Mount Athos. They also embark on a wonderful journey through the world of Byzantine art. An art that is close to children’s souls, for it does not use shadow, perspective, divisions of time. A year and a half has already passed since the 13th January 2015, the day when Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain was declared a Saint of the Orthodox Church by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Since then he has been venerated as a Saint, even though he was considered a Saint during his lifetime. A special service has been written for his name day, the 12th July, icons of him have been written. The appropriate honor and devotion is his. This has been a great, long awaited and joyous event; a pleasant, yet not unexpected surprise, given to us by God’s love in these evil days. The joy and jubilation of Resurrection warms our hearts, tears are streaming from our eyes, for the Holy Elder, whom we knew and loved and in whom we placed, after God, all our hopes, has been formally glorified as a Saint. So much has been written about the Elder since his blessed fall­ing asleep in 1994, by people who have known him intimately. Some of these witnesses happen to be Elder Isaac’s (of Blessed memory) Holy Synodeia from the Hermitage of the Resurrec­tion, Kapsala, on Mount Athos. We now present their book Elder Paisios of Mount Athos, a Life to the English speaking pub­lic in a second edition, since the first edition has gone out of print. This book has been very warmly received, especially in America and Australia. May the blessing of Saint Paisios be with the readers of this book.
